The Drefach AFC home pitch rejuvenation project

by Clwb Pel Droed Drefach AFC in Drefach, Wales, United Kingdom

We did it
On 16th July 2020 we successfully raised £7,358 with 206 supporters in 42 days

The football pitch at our club has become unplayable during the winter due to drainage issues and is in need of attention

New stretch target

Any additional funding over the £5,000 would help us divert money into other areas, such as provision of playing kits and equipment for each age group.  This should help reduce the cost to parents which we hope would make grass roots football at Drefach AFC a more inclusive sport for people of all backgrounds within our communities.

Also once the field at our club is drained and back playable additional funding could and will always go towards improving our facilities.  One small project following the drainage would be raising a new fence/mesh around the bottom end of the pitch which would catch any balls from being lost into the neighbouring rough land.

Our long term project is to look into acquiring the neighbouring agricultural land and developing more playable pitches and training areas at our home club for our ever growing club to use.

But as they say - baby steps

UPDATE - Following the Welsh Assembly Governments Announcement on Friday the 10th of July, regarding the easing of restrictions, we have just been told by the Football Association of Wales (FAW) the guidelines on how we can incorporate players safely back into football training sessions.  To be able to do this for ALL of our age groups, there is a huge emphasis on outdoor space and thus a massive need for us to be able to carry out this project as soon as we can in order to create more playing / training space.

So from all of us here at Clwb Pel Droed Drefach, a big THANK YOU because we are very grateful for all of your support through likes and donations.

Who are we and what do we do?

We are Clwb Pel Droed Drefach (AFC) and we are a local village football club competing at the grassroots level. Through the help of volunteers only, we now run approx 15 teams (boys and girls) ranging from the U6’s to U16’s and including senior men’s and ladies teams.  We aim to provide members/players with a safe, inclusive, friendly environment to develop skills and encourage participation in amateur football. In all, the club has more than 250 registered players.

Our clubs aim has, is and always will be, to provide access to grass roots football to children of all abilities in and around our communities.

Since Covid-19 and the restrictions placed upon us all, our committee have never felt more passion and drive.  We want to make sure that we are able to help bring back community spirit in our villages, by being able to provide facilities, equipment and coaching to children of all ages.  Promoting being active through football has been proven to help tremendously with mental health and after being stuck in doors for so long we can't wait to get everyone back involved.

Please take 5 min to read and hopefully support our appeal, thank you.

Why we need your help

We have one pitch located at our club, but with the existing drainage issues and the volume of rain we have seen in the last two seasons during the winter, has meant we have played very few games on this pitch.  We are in need of some financial help to drain it.

Other than the field at our club, we rely heavily on community spaces (some on short term leases) to get all of the different age groups playing football on a Saturday/Sunday morning.  Our current ‘main’ pitch is on a relatively short term lease from the local council.

The club committee believes that this project will not only help us by increasing our number of pitches back to a level that is needed for us to sustain this many junior teams, but it will also protect us as a club from a potentially crippling knock on effect to our junior set up if we were to lose our main pitch back to the council and have an unplayable pitch at home.

Therefore we are trying to turn our home pitch into our main pitch to secure grassroots for our children.

What your help would enable us to achieve

By committing to get our own pitch playable we are not only strengthening our commitment to developing the age groups we have, but also making a firm commitment to the children/parents that this is a long term club that they can all feel a part of and from here develop it further together.

How we plan to resolve our problem

1) We need funds to pay for a machine and driver to open a sizeable ditch between our playing field and the farmers land next door, this would divert all ground water away from our playing area.

2) We then need to raise the money for the materials and labour to raise a livestock proof fence around the ditch on the farmers side and a childproof fence on the clubs side.

3) All of the work required will be carried out by volunteers and local companies associated to our club who specialise in this field, but even so, the cost of this project is substantial to a small community club like ours

Total spend £10,000

All costs are approximations -

Groundwork - dig out the ditch along the whole field neighbouring the farm as seen in the photos £4,000

Stone/chippings and drainage pipe to be back filled into the bottom of the ditch to aid with the diversion of groundwater - £3000

Livestock fencing and posts to run the entire length of the field to stop livestock from falling into the ditch from the farmers field and the upgrading of any areas of the existing fence to ensure any young children cannot access - £2-3000

The project doesn't have many components to spend on BUT the work that is required is required on a large length of land, thus the amounts add up fast.  This project will be the first step for us in rejuvenating the pitch.

We fully intend on delivering a new fence around 3/4 of the playing field to stop balls being lost, a new dugout or container with windows for supporters and parents to keep dry/warm on match days and obviously all the sport equipment that is required to for football on a football pitch (flags, line markers, goals, nets etc)

What else do we do?

1) We currently raise money through sponsorship from various local businesses. Our sponsors help with the purchasing of kits for our players and we are grateful to those who have recently made a commitment to us for the next 3 years.

2) Players and parents continue to support their teams and our club by paying monthly playing fees and by taking part in various fundraising opportunities.
