What is the need for your project in the community and how will your project improve local life?
After the lockdown, we need to find a permanent home for the station - and the good news is there is a room in a Community building in the town. From here the dream is build an Audio/Visual Hub where the young people in our rural community can learn to present shows, edit, broadcast and read the news. We'd also like ot explore the possibility of having a studio in the Cotsowld School in Bourton on the Water - where again more training and development can be done. Ultimately I'd like younger people in the community to go on to become journalists or work in the entertainment industry.
As part of the funding round, I'd also like to buy some Alexa's for the elderly in our community so the radio station can be easier to access and provide some comfort to them during the lockdown. We believe most homes have WiFi but no way of accessing the show as we are an internet only station. It would be great to bring some joy into these older people's homes and of course with Alexa the station can be accessed through voice alone.
Who will benefit from your project?
The local community of Northleach and the surrounding North Cotswolds. Every day we broadcast to 300-400 people in our area, keeping them up to date on local news regarding Coronavirus. The whole community is more than 2000 people. We are particularly hoping to help the elderly and infirm by giving them access to the station via Alexa and expanding the number of programmes we can offer.
A group to particularly benefit will be children aged 8-18 who can come and learn about a radio station. Hopefully this can help tackle youth unemployment in our area.
Tell us more about your project and how it will benefit your community if you are successful.
We set up Radio Northleach as, when the lockdown started, I felt everyone in my community really scared and I wanted to bring some joy. We haven't been going long but we've already attracted listeners in Scotland, Denmark and Australia as well as a loyal base of circa 250 listeners each morning to my breakfast show.
I'd like to do more and give all the older people in town an Alexa so they can listen to and hopefully have an hour away from the misery of lockdown. I deliver a breakfast show each day and a quiz on Thursday's. Other broadcasters deliver Jazz, poetry readings, a Food and Drink show and a House Party night on Saturday nights. Most excitingly we now have 2 teenagers broadcasting regularly on the station - a real glimpse of what could be done in the future.
All of this is designed to bring a little cheer. Having invested in a professional Cloud platform,we have run out of funds now and so we're self funding from here on in. I feel we can expand the programming and in the project I need to find the station a permanent home. Could we also link to college training courses maybe?
