Every year CalMac Ferries transport over 370,000 passengers to the Isle of Cumbrae, many of whom are day trippers. The Isle of Cumbrae is one of the most accessible islands on the West Coast of Scotland. The ferry journey from Largs is only 15-minutes! The Isle of Cumbrae is well known for cycling, golf, fishing and spectacular walks. Over the past 25 years it has successfully hosted various annual music festivals as well as a vintage car show event. Family groups regularly return to the island to enjoy our sandy beaches, or perhaps, visiting the Cathedral of the Isles, the smallest cathedral in Great Britain. On a sunny weekend the island has been visited by over 17,500 day-trippers and holidaymakers.
In 2017 North Ayrshire Council announced that, due to lack of funding they had decided to close all public toilets on the island. These public toilets are a vital facility, especially for the many visiting tourists. Therefore in April 2017, Cumbrae Community Development Company (CCDC) completed an asset transfer from the local council and took over the running of the public toilets on the island. All the associated costs were met by donations and funding raised by CCDC with the help and support of residents and visitors.
Public toilets on the Island are a vital facility to help sustain our tourism industry, the island's main source of income. We have a small permanent population on the Island of approx. 1,400. All of whom are committed to supporting the sustainability of the public toilets for visitors and locals alike.
CCDC now intends to install coin operated door mechanisms into the public toilet blocks for which they are responsible. The estimated cost of this plan is £10,000. Once this has been implemented, all monies generated will go directly towards the ongoing annual cleaning and maintenance costs.
To date CCDC has raised funds through donation tins located within many of the business premises on the island. In addition, a successful 'Sponsor a Toilet' initiative was introduced whereby local community groups contribute to the upkeep of a specific toilet block. Income has been generated by the sale in local shops and online of an Island Calendar. The photographs displayed in the calendar were donated by residents and visitors to the island. In October 2019 following a successful grant application through the Scottish Land Trust, CCDC were able to fund the installation a new sewerage system at one site and a larger septic tank at another. This reducing the annual running costs by £4,000.
Our long-term goal is to upgrade the public toilets, incorporate new baby changing facilities and improve access. The steps described and advertised in this document are being taken by CCDC to ensure that this goal will be realised.
